SPX2024: A Bonanza In Zines, Workshops & Self Publishing
After years of wanting to go but never making it, THIS YEAR I finally managed to attend the Small Press Expo or SPX 2024 in Bethesda, Maryland … and man, I just can’t tell you how excited I am to have attended!
If you’re into zine designs, graphic novels, cartooning, indie comics, and self publishing, THIS is *the* event to attend.
The ambiance at SPX is all about creative and independent self expression ✊🏾
It’s a near impossibility to NOT walk out from the exhibit hall or numerous workshops without feeling inundated with inspiration.
So many vendors and self publishers, so little time.
The exhibit hall was oozing with endless, self published designs, artworks galore, and tons of cool merch for sale. Any indie genre you could imagine, trust me, it was there.
Honestly, attending this event was an eye-opening and creativity-widening experience.
I didn’t realize so many folks, from as far as Seattle and California on the West Coast and plenty of international folks too, were this fanatic about producing, supporting, and consuming independently published material.
Given my own independent publishing work with EXUDE, I’m so glad I attended this year’s SPX event.
Ohhh and then there were FREE workshops!!
I myself attended three of the SPX2024 workshops; my favorite one was the Lettering WTF? with Tom Hart which allowed everyone attending to hands-on practice hand lettering comics.
And the zine workshop, Paper Possibilities: Exploring One-Sheet Zine Formats with Kori Handwerker, was also a fave; the instructor inspired fresh layout and zine design ideas I had not previously considered.
But as a mixed media artist, the third workshop I attended, Making Comics With Unconventional Materials with Filipa Estrela, was definitely a hit as well. That’s because the class encouraged folks to experiment making comics using a range of different materials, and working with all kinds of materials is so right up my mixed media alley.
In conclusion, I can’t wait to attend next year’s SPX!!
That’s pretty much all I there is to share about my SPX2024 experience and I look forward to attending again in 2025.
